Random from Favourites

The favorites are a collection of both pictures that have been genuinely improved through critique, as well as various "serious" artworks that may serve as an example and/or a source of inspiration.
This journal comes from :iconclaralieu:, an art professor who would like to share with prospective artists a book that they have completed writing that may help and aid those who are looking to succeed in their art beyond their current level of accomplishment. Cheers!

Clara writes:

I'm an art professor, and I would like to share with you the publication of my new book, "Learn, Create, and Teach: A Guide to Building a Creative Life." This book delivers succinct, practical, and candid advice that addresses both common concerns in the creative path and the challenges an artist faces in the real world.

What people are saying about the book:

"…a great collection of key lessons that will help anyone become more successful in life and their chosen profession."

"...A definite must-have for any prospective or on-coming art students curious about what to expect, the practical advice provided here ultimately pertains to anyone at any level in a creative career."

“The wisdom in this book would take art students and new artists years to accumulate…”

Who are we?

Serious Artists is, as you may have guessed from the title, a club created by, with and for serious artists. These are artists who take their craft seriously, who understand what it takes to become a good, or perhaps even a great artist and have the drive and will to get there.

This is a place were such artists may come together to be inspired, to give and receive critique and to encourage. Know that this is not a place for a pat on the back, unless you truly deserved one.

PLEASE READ: If you are trying to join, be sure to provide us with a small explanation on why you would like to be a part of this group. I'm also encouraging you to tell us a bit about yourself and what you are striving for as an artist. This helps us to get an idea of your sincerity and of course it's nice to know a little more about who is joining!

Empty join requests may be declined without further explanation.

Members, contributors as well as the founder of this club are serious about art, about their own and other people's improvement. It speaks for itself that there is no level of quality required, but if you can't give or take critique well, then this is probably not the group for you. Remember that any critique given to you is an attempt to help you improve, not to make you feel bad or discourage you. Even if you don't agree with the critique, it is still all good intent so be curt.

Work submitted to this gallery must (obviously) be your own. Once submitted, it is automatically subject to critique in whatever form. It helps if you point out a specific area you're having trouble with. We do not accept literature work as we can't provide proper critique on it. Our group's focus lies on visual art only.

Giving inappropriate critique or "butthurt" responses to genuine critique will result in removal of your membership or in severe cases even a ban. You may also want to read these pointers on critique to get you started.

Although I would think this is logical, if someone took the time to write a critique for you, be sure to let them know you read it. If we feel that you aren't being serious about the critique or if you ignore it, we will send you a reminder. Fail to respond to that and there's a big chance you will be removed from the group. Please don't waste people's time like that.

Members may only submit 1 piece a day to prevent flooding (and honestly, one genuine critique a day should give you plenty of material to think about and work with).

Thanks for accepting me! :D

Btw i just found something out! you can better critique your own work if you hold it up to a mirror and look at it, i have no idea why it works but it's what Da'Vinci did
i sooo wish i had known this sooner, hope this helps anyone!

It works because when your piece is mirrored you look at it with fresh eyes, making it easier to spot mistakes :). For digital pieces this is as easy as flipping the canvas, in real life a mirror will do.

Fascinating! That is a really clever method of re-evaluating your own work. Flipping it upside down or from left to right in an image editing program can also help. Thank you so much for your insight! ^^ And you are very welcome - I hope you enjoy your time here and learn what you're wishing to learn!

Would it be considered a hate crime if I was to leave a nonsensical message here like "free the shrimp!" or "Water is a good kind of substance." ? I mean this is the SERIOUS artist club but I don't know how serious you take it.

I'd be okay with semi-random messages, but as long as they aren't posted repeatedly or distract from other people's messages too greatly. While we are 'serious' about our art, a bit of humor is healthy. ^^

While this is my particular opinion, I do not know the position that the group creator, :iconlhuneart:, holds on random nonsense messages, and they hold the cards on the ultimate decision. Thank you for asking, though! That shows a lot more clout than someone who posts a nonsense message and then apologizes later if it ends up being a problem. Cheers!
